At Florida Public Utilities, safety is our top priority. From proactive pipeline repair to rapid emergency response, safety is at the forefront of everything we do. That’s why we built Safety Town, a state-of-the-art training center in DeBary, Florida.

The facility features training classrooms, equipment storage and shed-style homes. These structures simulate the residential settings where our employees work every day.

Safety Town provides an immersive, hands-on safety briefings environment for our employees who build, maintain and operate our energy infrastructure. We also offer training to first responders, in order to familiarize them with natural gas and the equipment used to deliver it to homes and businesses.

Spanning roughly one acre, DeBary’s Safety Town opened in 2025 and was modeled after Chesapeake Utilities’ Safety Town in Dover, Delaware. Both centers allow participants to practice technical skills, emergency response and safety procedures in real-world scenarios.

What Training Topics are Covered?

DeBary’s Safety Town offers dynamic learning experiences that combine classroom instruction with field practice.

Some of the topics covered in the safety training include:

  • Emergency response coordination
  • Infrastructure inspections
  • Main and service line installation and repair
  • Propane tank safety
  • Valve operation and meter maintenance
  • Confined space training
  • Utility line locating and excavation safety

The DeBary location also has specialized learning environments, where simulations are used to help participants practice responses to line strikes and gas leaks, perform service connections, locate utilities, detect leaks and monitor for corrosion.

As industry needs evolve, the curriculum will continue to grow, ensuring our workforce remains at the forefront of safety and technical excellence.

Who Does Safety Town Serve?

Safety Town supports the safety of our team, first responders and the greater community.

Operations teams use the facility to strengthen technical skills, reinforce safety practices and prepare for emergency situations they may face in the field.

First responders—including fire, EMS and law enforcement—train at Safety Town to improve coordination, align response procedures and build strong working relationships before emergencies happen.

All of these efforts work collectively to help us protect the communities we proudly serve.

Why Safety Training is Important

Proactively learning about natural gas and the equipment used to deliver it is a more effective approach than training during an emergency. It gives participants the ability to process the information, develop and practice skills and ask questions without the pressure of a real-time issue.

Additionally, the training program develops critical partnerships between energy professionals and emergency responders. It allows both sides to build rapport, better understand their roles and where they intersect.

By providing real-life training experiences, our Safety Town facilities ensure our teams are equipped to handle emergency situations, maintain infrastructure and perform their jobs safely and efficiently.
