October 24, 2012—A greener community and lower energy costs may be officially within reach for Fernandina Beach. Thanks to a 10-year agreement approved by the Florida Public Service Commission in July and finalized by the two companies in October, FPU will now buy excess energy produced by the 22.5 mega-watt turbine generator located at Reyonier’s Fernandina mill.

“Our agreement with Rayonier not only provides a local source of renewable energy capable of powering over 1,200 homes, but it helps to lower FPU’s energy costs—and will ultimately allow us to pass such savings onto local customers in the form of lower rates,” said Jeff Householder, President of FPU.
