October 26, 2011–Florida Public Utilities (FPU) has brought new light to citywide energy-efficiency by installing 27 LED (Light-Emitting Diode) streetlights in various locations throughout Fernandina Beach.
As part of a partnership between FPU and the City of Fernandina Beach, formed to develop and execute various energy-efficiency and conservation upgrades, the new LED streetlights have been installed, which require far less electricity and last much longer than traditional incandescent lights. This can result in significant cost and energy-savings over the life of the bulb. FPU funded 24 of the 27 new LED bulb upgrades and the City provided funding for the remaining three.
“FPU is committed to working toward energy-efficiency and conservation measures,” explains Mark Cutshaw, General Manager of FPU’s Northeast Division. “Through this partnership with the City, both parties are able to actively develop energy-efficient technologies and conservation measures that result in enhanced services for the community at a lower cost. Upgrading City streetlights was a logical and important step, but it also represents the first of many.”
Those interested in seeing the new LED streetlights can visit the City’s web site at www.fbfl.us/sustainability for a map of locations. FPU is especially interested in hearing residents’ comments and feedback and has designated the following phone number specifically for input: 904-277-1982.
